How to make a Reddit story video

There are two kinds of Reddit story video. One is an AI voice reading a post over gameplay. The other is a recording of a phone scrolling the thread. txtreel makes the second kind. This guide shows how, and how to add your own voice.

How to make a Reddit story video with your own voiceover

  1. 1Open the Reddit story video generator. Write the subreddit, author, title and post text.
  2. 2Add comments below the post. Start a line with > for a reply and >> for a reply to a reply. Write OP as the name for the author's replies.
  3. 3Set votes and age in brackets, like sleepy_joe [12K 5h]: text. Choose light or dark mode.
  4. 4Press play to watch the scroll, then render and download the 1080×1920 MP4.
  5. 5Record your voiceover while you watch the video. Lay it over the MP4 in CapCut or another editor and export.

What is a Reddit story video?

It is a short video that tells the story of a Reddit post, often from r/AmItheAsshole, r/tifu or r/MaliciousCompliance. Most of them show the post and its top comments.

The picture is either a phone scrolling the real page layout, or a background such as gameplay footage. The sound is either an AI voice or the creator's own voice.

What does txtreel make, and what does it not make?

txtreel makes the phone-scrolling picture. It does not make the voice or the background.

  • It does: a mobile reddit.com view with the subreddit, author, title, body, votes and age.
  • It does: nested comments with OP labels, votes and "more replies" rows, scrolled like someone reading it.
  • It does: light and dark mode, and a 1080×1920 H.264 MP4 at 30 fps.
  • It does not: read the story aloud. There is no AI voice or narration.
  • It does not: add gameplay or any background footage.

How do you write nested comments?

The script is plain text. One line is one comment. The number of > signs sets the depth. Votes and age go in brackets before the colon.

  • title: the post title
  • body: one line per paragraph of the post
  • sleepy_joe [12K 5h]: a top-level comment
  • > OP [4.8K]: a reply by the post's author, shown with the blue OP label
  • >> sleepy_joe [2.9K]: a reply to that reply
  • [318 more replies]: a collapsed row under the comment above
  • [pause 1]: wait one second while scrolling

How do you add your own voiceover?

Render the MP4, then play it while you record. A phone's voice recorder is enough. Read the post while the video scrolls, then read the comments as they appear.

Import both files into an editing app such as CapCut, line them up and export. Captions and music are added in that app too. txtreel does not do this step.

AI voice tools or a phone recording: which should you pick?

AI voice tools are faster if you want narration over gameplay and do not want to record. They are built for that format and txtreel is not.

A phone recording looks like a person reading the thread. Pick txtreel if you want that look, want your own voice, or want to pair the scroll with your own edit. The comparison page lists which tools have an AI voice.

Can I use a real Reddit post?

txtreel is for storytelling and entertainment. Do not present invented content as a real post or use it as evidence. The terms forbid it. If you retell a real post, follow the subreddit's rules and ask the author.

It is free, with no account and no watermark. From the website you can render 30 videos and 120 screenshots per hour per IP address. A video can be up to 180 seconds long. Renders are deleted after 24 hours and drafts stay in your browser.
